Do you love live theater plays or would like to experience one? If you are looking for some reasonably priced fun for your family or friends, the Roxy Regional Theatre is a perfect place to go. The Roxy Regional Theatre is an award-winning theater and is one of Tennessee’s top tourist destinations. It is standing on a corner of the Public Square, located in the historic downtown part of Clarksville. It is the oldest live theater and the only professional theater in Clarksville, loved by locals and tourists alike.

For over 30 years, the Roxy Regional Theatre has been bringing live theater depicting modern dramas, popular musicals, classic plays and Shakespearean classics. The Roxy also stages class projects by the students of the Roxy School of Arts, presented in the OtherSpace, a 50-seat black box theater.

In addition to offering a wide variety of cutting edge plays and musicals, the Roxy also presents exhibits just beyond the lobby, highlighting the works of local and regional artists. The theater has also been used as a stage set for a lot of documentaries, films, photo shoots, music videos and television commercials; remarkably for Grammy-award winning song All I Wanna Do by Sheryl Crow.

History

  • In 1912, the Lilian was the first theater built on the corner of Franklin and First, which has been the pillar for Clarksville's entertainment community since the early 1900s.
  • The Lilian Theater caught fire in 1913 and was rebuilt in 1914 presenting silent pictures loved by thousands of patrons.
  • A second fire happened in the theater in 1945 and so the Lilian Theater was completely rebuilt and became the Roxy Theater.

The Roxy Regional School of Arts

The Roxy Regional School of Arts was born in 1995 offering classes to students at least 10 years old, who are interested in theater, as well as dancing and music. The instructors are the Roxy’s artistic director John McDonald and the members of the professional company.

Expansion Plans

Plans are in progress to expand the current 153-seat Roxy Regional Theater. It will be modernized into the Roxy Regional Center for the Arts and Education which includes art galleries, studio spaces, coffee and gift shops, classrooms for dance, art, theater, music and Kindermusic, a welcome center for Clarksville, and a state-of-the-art 500-seat performance hall. Worldwide known theatrical architect John Sergio Fisher created the model of the proposed building, drawings and a virtual walk-through.
